Web Floor Trusses for Luxury Open Floor Plan

For the upper floor of our new home, we chose open-web floor trusses instead of I-joists. Although they cost more, they give us greater flexibility in three areas that matter to this design.

First, the floor trusses can be engineered to span wide areas, reducing the need for support walls or columns on the first floor. This helps us create the open, spacious living areas for luxury residence.

Second, the open spaces within the floor trusses make it easier to route utilities (plumbing, heating ductwork, and electrical lines) across the house. With I-joists, the utility installers must cut the I-joists to pass through carefully their pipes or lines, and the opening cuts sometimes are limited since they must meet the manufacturer’s requirements. The floor trusses give our utility subcontractors more room to work and help keep those utility systems within the floor structure easily.

Thirdly, A solid connection to the subfloor. The wide top chords on our floor trusses provide ample surface for gluing and fastening the subfloor. Combined with careful installation, this helps create a firm floor and reduce the chance of squeaks.

For a home designed around open, luxurious spaces and thoughtful construction, the floor trusses is the better way to go.
